Are You Afraid of the Dentist?

26 Jan

Harold H Fagan, DDS, Ltd & Justin Zalewsky, DMD, MS - Alexandria, VADoes the sound of a dentist drill drive you crazy? For many people just thinking about the drill makes their palms sweat and their mouth dry. There are millions of people who are afraid to go to the dentist because of the memories of their childhood, a previously horrible experience with a past dentist, or even just because they are afraid of the pain they may feel in their mouth. If you do not go to the dentist for your recommended bi annual cleaning then you are putting your mouth to serious risk of infection. Not only may you have problems like tartar, which builds on your teeth if you do not brush them, but you may also have problems with your gums, which could end up causing you a big problem if you are found to have a receding gum line. For people who are afraid of the dentist, dental sedation is available to help the person sit in the chair and feel comfortable while the dentist pokes around in their mouth.

There are many different things that a dentist can give a patient to make them feel more relaxed. Nitrus gas can be given to the patient which is a great idea as the dentist sedation is able to control the amount of gas that the patient is getting. The reason why dentists like this type of sedation is because the minute they turn on the gas it is working, and the second they shut the gas off the person can go back to normal and even drive themself home from the dental appointment. Most people report feeling like they are up in the clouds when they are on the nitrus gas. The amount of gas given depends on the person’s pain tolerance and on the size of their body weight as well.

Some dentists like to give their patient a muscle relaxer, like Ativan, to take before they go into the dentist visit so that they can be more relaxed when the dentist is going to work on their mouth. The only drawback to taking this type of medication is that the dentist will not let the person drive them self to or from the appointment as Ativan can be a very potent muscle relaxer. The patient will also most likely have to go right home and not to work after they have taken this type of pill. IV sedation is also available but the most extreme form of sedation. The dentist will administer an IV to the patient to put them to sleep so that the dentist could do work on the patient’s mouth. This is the same type of IV sedation that is given to people who are undergoing surgery and there are risks involved as well.

Dealing with Laser Eye Surgery Cost

05 Jan

When a person is trying to save as much money as possible on laser eye surgery cost they must be prepared to do some research in order to find the best possible deal. What makes this surgery so desirable is that once done a person will never have to wear contact lenses or prescription glasses again. If an individual has to get new glasses every year the money that would be saved with this surgery is very substantial. Since most health insurance providers do not cover the cost of this surgery an individual will have to pay out of their pocket for the entire operation. The average prices across the country ranges from $500-$3,500 per eye depending on the clinic doing the surgery. These high costs have prompted individuals to request financing from the clinics they are visiting. Financing to credit worth patients has become very popular for clinics trying to increase the number of patients they serve throughout the course of a year.

My Wife is Going Back to School

04 Jan

After months of debating back and forth, my wife has decided to go back to school. She’s been looking into a few different public health degrees and has decided it will be worth the time and effort to get one. I’m very excited for her. I know it is going to take some hard work for the next year or so, but she’ll see the rewards of it for the rest of her career. She loves what she’s doing, so getting this degree will ensure that she can continue to grow and move up. The most important thing for her is that it will allow her to continue to feel fulfilled by her job. The extra money she’ll earn as she advances certainly will help as well. So, you may notice that she’s hitting the books a little more often over the next few months. After she’s done, we’ll take everyone out to celebrate!

Treating Toenail Fungus Requires Diligence

29 Nov

Skin Fungus Infection and Possible Treatments Part 2Treating toenail fungus involves dedication and persistence. It is important to first see a doctor, podiatrist, or dermatologist for a proper diagnosis before beginning treatment. Regardless of the treatment modality chosen, there is a chance of reinfection that comes with it. Treatments may include topical medications and oral medications, which must be taken diligently. A large portion of returning infections result from failing to stick to a routine during treatment. For another option to treat a nail fungus infection San Francisco podiatrist Dr Reyzelman recommends laser toenail fungal treatment. Not only is the success rate of the procedure higher than oral or topical preparations, it is usually completed in one to four sessions. This means that there will not be the months of remembering to use the product that comes with oral and topical treatments. It should not be forgotten that the chances of reinfection are the same as with other treatments.

It's All About the Teeth (and the Reputable Dental Practitioner)!

22 Oct

Many women (and increasingly men) spend a lot of their income on moisturisers, eye creams and haircuts to look good, yet they often neglect to invest in their teeth. This is strange considering teeth contribute to facial attractiveness and we only get one adult set so we need to look after them for our health too. Having taken the plunge to get my teeth straightened at the age of 30, I can honestly say that the eighteen months of braces were more than worth the cost in terms of actually being able to look at myself in the mirror without sighing. Luckily I had ‘Invisalign’ braces (clear braces) and they were much less noticeable than the ugly metal train-tracks I had as a teenager. No more horrible fake smiles with my lips closed to avoid showing my teeth! But its not the end of the story because I realise that my years of drinking 5 cups of coffee a day have taken their toll. So, although I’m happy my teeth are straight, I now hate their horrible yellow colour! I searched online in the hope of finding a cheap teeth-whitening practitioner, and noticed that there are quite a few non-dentists offering to whiten your teeth. What scared me when I looked closer at some of the websites was that you could sign up to be a practitioner operating a franchise in your local area after minimal training. I would not want to risk my health for the sake of saving a few quid. I think I will go back to a reputable and professional dentist that I can trust, such as The Dental Centre Cuffley.

Using Your Skills

08 Aug

I am highly trained in first aid to the point of having done a first aid instructor course. So when my dog fell and badly cut her foot I was able to help her by stopping the bleeding and dressing it until I could get her to a vet. She’s a very nervous dog and didn’t like me touching her foot at all. She kept hiding behind the sofa so that I couldn’t get to her. This happened on a Sunday so I couldn’t get her to a vet straight away but I thought the dressing would last until the next morning. However, when we got up the next morning she had chewed the whole thing off and had licked her foot raw. When I got an appointment for her to be seen she didn’t want to get in the car, I think she knew what was happening. She’s all stitched up now and on the mend thank goodness.

Natural Remedies for Acid Reflux

28 Jun

One of the primary contributing reasons why many people are constantly looking for heartburn relief remedies is because of the types of foods and drinks they eat and drink, or the adherence to a poor diet plan. Curing heartburn and reversing the damaging effects caused by acid reflux starts with immediate and proper treatment, and by changing ones overall diet regimen and sticking to it religiously.

To start integrating the ideal natural acid reflux diet plan into ones life may not be the easiest thing to do and achieve for most people, especially for those who have already grown attached to eating the same kind of foods they’ve been used to for most of their adult lives. It is a gradual process that needs to be done the soonest time possible in order to achieve success, and a few sacrifices have to be made – but is ultimately better than opting for a medical acid reflux treatment if you can help it. The task begins with identifying the foods and drinks that triggers acid reflux to happen.

This may be done by categorizing the food and beverage types to easily identify which ones to take and which to avoid, starting with fruits that may be more acidic than others, such as that of tomatoes, oranges, grapefruits, pineapples, sour apples, sour peaches, sour plums, and lemons. Although these fruits are rich in natural vitamin C and considered very helpful in maintaining a strong and healthy body, if taken in excess may lead some people to develop hyperacidity in their stomachs and sooner or later cause acid reflux. With a cut-down of such triggers, your struggle will be more successful.

Foods that are considered highly acidic, and even spicy ones, have been known to cause flare ups with some people. Although clinical testing shows that the stomach’s PH levels doesn’t change that much to raise acidity levels dangerously when such foods are ingested, some people may have a great deal of intolerance or sensitivity for such food types.

Fatty food is also another type of food to consider taking out with all seriousness from ones present diet. The stomach even with its potent gastric juices and enzymes need exert extra effort to break it down properly for proper absorption by secreting more than the normal amount of acids. Fatty foods also hinder the lower esophageal sphincter from carrying out its intended job as the part that regulates the passing of food from the esophagus down to the stomach, and as the barrier to prevent stomach acids from seeping out and injuring the esophagus. The presence of too much acid in the stomach combined with a weakened sphincter usually ends up with excessive reflux symptoms.

Drinks and beverages also place high in the list of sustenance to avoid. Here are just some of the top favorites of many people nowadays: coffee, tea, sodas, and alcoholic drinks. Coffee is full of natural acids, and when a person drinks more than the average number of cups in a day, the more acidic will buildup in the stomach. Sodas, wine, whisky, gin, brandy, or beer all contain high alcoholic levels that make the stomach produce more acid. Therefore, if you notice that your stomach acts up whenever you drink any of the listed drinks, then you will know for sure the chief causing reason behind it.

It is also good practice to eat several light meals and snacks everyday besides avoiding foods and drinks that trigger acid reflux attacks. Natural remedies for acid reflux such as the ones mentioned greatly help in keeping the distressing and painful symptoms of acid reflux. By changing bad eating habits into a healthy one, you can take active control of your condition and heal it much easier and faster and end your suffering without undue damage to your body and to your way of living.

Kathy is Changing Her Herpes Medication

24 Jun

Kathy called me up the other to day to tell me that she was changing her herpes treatment. This came as a relief to me since I have been trying to convince her to stop using whatever it was she was taking for her herpes infection. I think it really does not have any effect on her and she is really paying a lot of money to buy these on a monthly basis.

Instead, I told her that she should try to go see her doctor so she can get some prescriptions for the correct herpes medication that she should be taking. I know that these will work better on her since I have read in several magazines and journals that these are really the recommended and indicated method of treatment for people that have the herpes simplex virus in their bodies.

I really hope she starts to listen to my advice. It’s for her own good anyway.
